tell me true...

What is beauty?

Not asking what things are beautiful. Am asking what you mean when you say something is beautiful. Is beauty a correspondence to the ideal (It is good, proportional, etc. in substance and form)? Is beauty subjective (It makes me feel a certain way)?

Not looking for anything heady. Just curious what you mean when you say something is beautiful.

Pray tell. No room for shyness on this one...

That's a very good question and I'll have to spin the wheels to answer that one.

Beauty makes you want to stare and is pleasing on the eyes. If manners allow, it's something you want to observe for more than the current moment.

It is ideal proportions. Ideal to one may not necessarily be ideal to another.

Beauty can make you temporarily forget what's on your mind, and that can especially be a good thing if you're pre-occupied with something you shouldn't be pre-occupied with.

Beauty can be larger than life too. It has to be more than just proportions because a sunrise is beautiful. But then again, isn't that just ideal proportion? The correct proportion of colors?

A good question, indeed, and one I'll have to think more of and get back to you later.

And what happened to Dave's blog?

i think i may have made some stab at this a long drunken while ago and i can't say anything for sure, but feel that beuaty is caught in moments. especially for me.
it's something that when seen/heard/walked into/through affirms something in the spirit. it's a lifting force, but temporary, ultimately. There are more lasting types of beauty but people generally get bored after a while. With things like the sistene chapel say or a good piece of music, what confirms its beauty is the fact that it yeilds that same momentous lift upon further visits.
it may or may not be a replication of the ideal. And people have different takes on the form of things. and what zombieslayer says rings true to me--you want to be able to observe it for more than the moment of witness, but in most cases cannot.
beauty creates sparks. it erases the world and reaffirms it in the same instant.
and this sounds like a bit of a crock, but hey...

Thanks for weighing in with good words bearing great weight.

Would like to see more folk mix their thoughts into the bowl.

Z - Dave's blog is out for now, but think it may be back eventually. I think he let his domain lapse.

T - Fond memories of strands of this conversation drunk with lack of sunlight and the wind of thrown books.

Tell him the next time you see him that he needs to write. The guy has talent. He can write about burgers and fries and it would be fascinating.
